Our Cotton Tea Bags

At SingularTea we believe that what holds your tea is just as important as what’s inside it. That’s why, after extensive research, we chose 100% unbleached cotton teabags. But why? Let’s break it down.

Paper Tea Bags

Paper Tea Bags

Bleaching & More

Paper tea bags may seem like a simple choice, but many are treated with bleaching agents, leaving behind harmful residues in your tea. They’re also often too small to hold whole leaves, meaning they mostly contain the broken-down fall-out. To make matters worse, some are reinforced with plastic sealants that release microplastics when steeped in hot water. That’s why they didn’t fit our herbal blends.

Plastic-Based Teabags

Plastic-Based Teabags

A Major Source of Microplastics

Some teabags are made from nylon or polypropylene, both of which are plastics. Studies show they release billions of microplastic and nanoplastic particles into hot water. These particles can accumulate in the body and contribute to long-term waste and environmental pollution. For us, plastic was never an option.

PLA Mesh Teabags

PLA Mesh Teabags

A Misleading “Eco-Friendly” Alternative?

Today, PLA (polylactic acid) mesh teabags are everywhere, marketed as biodegradable and plastic-free. But studies show that even after 7 months buried in soil, PLA bags remained almost fully intact. If they don’t break down in soil, how eco-friendly are they really? That’s why we chose not to use them.

Cotton Teabags

Why We Chose 100% Unbleached Cotton Teabags

Cotton teabags have been used for centuries, long before synthetic materials existed. After testing multiple options, we made a conscious decision to return to natural fibers:

  • No Microplastics. Cotton does not release synthetic particles.
  • Fully Biodegradable. Cotton naturally breaks down in the environment.
  • Ideal for Whole-Leaf Herbal Teas. Cotton allows herbs to fully expand and infuse.
  • Safe & Pure. No chemical treatments or bleaching agents.

We’ll be honest, using cotton wasn’t the easiest or cheapest choice. But it’s the best quality without compromising health or sustainability.

P.S. Prefer Loose-Leaf Tea?

That Works Too.

We get it, sometimes you just want the herbs without the teabag. That’s why we also offer herbal blends in loose-leaf form—a completely waste-free option.
